A museum in activity
The Paper Museum Terras de Santa Maria is, by its characteristics, an industrial museum
devoted to the Paper History in Portugal.
Settled in two old paper mills from the beginning of the XIX century, its major characteristic relies on the fact of being an active manufacturing and industrial museum, integrating an handmade paper space – The ancient Engenho da Lourença – and an industrial space – Casa da Máquina – where one demonstrates the continuous production process. Besides this permanent papermaking exhibition, one must point out the watermarks collection and the assets composed by pieces, which came from different paper mills all over the country.
In this museological space, visitors can take part in the different production processes, learning gestures and sharing papermaking memories.
