The Castle of Santa Maria da Feira is one of Portugal”s most remarkable monuments as it reflects the diversity of defensive measures employed between the 11th and 16th centuries.

In addition to its military importance, one should also acknowledge its political and cultural significance, as it proved crucial in the victory at the Battle of São Mamede in 1128, when the governor of the castle, Pêro Gonçalves de Marnel, decided to support D. Afonso Henriques against D. Teresa and the Count of Trava.

Recently, the “Comissão de Vigilância do Castelo de Santa Maria da Feira”, in partnership with IGESPAR, developed a Project for the Preservation and Renovation of the Castle of Santa Maria da Feira, with the financial support of the European Union, whose most relevant aspects are the preservation and restoration works in the Chapel and in the Keep that will be enable them to host conferences and meetings, musical shows, exhibits and other entertainment and tourism events, like the Medieval Journey in The Lands of Santa Maria.
